Our Summary

Brothers Tony and Terry Pearce first set out to change the world for the better in 1989. With Terry's 20 years of design, project management, and manufacturing experience was combined with Tony's 13 years of advanced aerospace materials experience, the pair eventually turned to developing materials that could be used as cushioning.

In 1996, the brothers invented Hyper-Elastic Polymer.™ It redistributed pressure off of the body's pressure points, provided the back support necessary for good sleep, was long-lasting, and bodies did not leave an impression on it.

Eventually, the Mattress Max,™ a patent-pending machine, was designed to mold Hyper-Elastic Polymer into king-sized mattress pieces. The Purple® Bed was invented to make better sleep more comfortable and affordable.

Sizes & Pricing

The Purple mattress is available in six sizes ranging from twin to California King.

  • Twin costs $649.
  • Twin XL weighs 70 pounds and costs $699.
  • Full weighs 81 pounds and costs $899.
  • Queen weighs 110 pounds and costs $999.
  • King weighs 140 pounds and costs $1,299.
  • California King weighs 140 pounds and costs $1,299.

Mattress Types & Makeup

Each Purple mattress is made of four primary components: the cover, comfort layer, transition layer, and base layer. These parts are designed to provide a specific purpose.

  • Cover

Designed to help with airflow, the Purple mattress is covered with a SoftFlex material. This is a combination of lycra, viscose, and polyester. It is both breathable and stretchy so it moves seamlessly with the layer underneath it.

  • Comfort Layer

The comfort layer contains the company's flagship material, Hyper-Elastic Polymer. Its unique grid structure allows the material to flex when it is under pressure points without compromising its supportive qualities.

This combination of both support and comfort results in a responsive feel that could be ideal for those people who sleep in a variety of different positions throughout the night. The comfort layer is edged with supportive polyfoam, is bouncy, and encourages a cool night's sleep.

  • Transition Layer

Sitting under the comfort layer is 3.5 inches of high-density polyfoam that makes up the transition layer. Because this material is both more supportive and firmer than the comfort layer, it keeps sleepers from sinking down into the mattress very far.

  • Base Layer

The final layer that makes up the Purple mattress is comprised of four inches of high-density polyfoam. This base layer material is part of what makes the mattress so supportive.

Comfort & Support

Purple also offers other models of mattresses: the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier. While these two hybrid mattresses are manufactured using Hyper-Elastic Polymer, it is placed over pocketed coils instead of poly foam. This distinction gives the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier a sturdier build and firmer feel compared to the brand's other mattresses.

The Purple mattress, as well as the Purple Hybrid mattress, are made with two inches of Hyper-Elastic Polymer. This gives them a firmer and more supportive feel.

For those sleepers who want a mattress that provides ample pressure relief while allowing them to sink into the comfort layer, the Purple Hybrid Premier mattress could be a good option. Those people who sleep primarily on their sides are likely to find that the Purple Hybrid Premier appeals to them in particular.

The pricing structure for the original Purple mattress begins at $649 for a twin. In contrast, the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses are more expensive. Their pricing starts at $1,299 and ranges up to $3,499 depending on which size is chosen.

Firmness level

The Purple mattress is designed to distribute pressure away from the body's sensitive areas -- shoulders, hips, and lower back, for example -- so the sleeper is comfortable the entire night.

Switching positions is aided by the responsiveness of the Hyper-Elastic Polymer material. Side sleepers will notice that they sink down somewhat in the mattress while still enjoying firm support and only minimal pressure.

Back sleepers will find that the Purple mattress doesn't allow them to sink too far down. In addition, it contributes to a well-aligned spine.

Those who sleep on their stomachs will welcome the level of support that doesn't allow their hips to sink down very far while still keeping their hips aligned. Because the Purple mattress features a combination of Hyper-Elastic Polymer and polyfoam, it absorbs the motion that is caused by other people or pets sleeping in the bed.
